STEM — science, technology, engineering and maths — runs through a lot of what cadets do at 1015 (Horsham) Squadron, from radio and drones to one of our most ambitious projects yet: building and racing our own electric car.
In 2025, 1015 Squadron joined the Greenpower Education Trust’s challenge, a national programme that gets young people designing, building and racing single-seat electric race cars. The squadron bought a Greenpower kit car for cadets to build from the ground up, with local housebuilder Thakeham donating £3,000 towards the cost. Cadets are now working on the car ahead of racing it at Greenpower events, picking up real engineering, electrical and teamwork skills along the way.
The squadron already has plans to go further, building a second, custom-designed car to race alongside the first. More than 10,000 young people take part in Greenpower nationally each year, and 1015 is proud to be one of them.
Beyond Greenpower, cadets can work through the RAF Air Cadets’ progressive cyber syllabus, building up to a Gold level award covering both offensive and defensive cyber skills through online Immersive Lab sessions. There’s also space education covering rockets, satellites and space exploration, plus the chance to enter national engineering and aerospace competitions — with our most engaged cadets able to apply for the National Air & Space Camp, the top national event for air, space and cyber.
No specialist knowledge is needed to get involved — just curiosity and a willingness to get stuck in.
